Scope Creep in Exodus 18

by Chet 3. February 2012 08:24
Today on the Daily Audio Bible we read Exodus 18. There are many stories I enjoy revisiting in our yearly revolution through the word, but this one has become both special and a continual challenge to me. Here's the story that always connects with me:  12 Then Jethro, Moses' father-in-law, brought a burnt offering and sacrifices to God, and Aaron came with all the elders of Israel to eat a meal with Moses' father-in-law in God's presence. 13 The next day Moses sat down to judge the people, and they stood around Moses from morning until evening. 14 When Moses' father-in-law saw everything he was doing for them he asked, "What is this thing you're doing for the people? Why are you alone sitting as judge, while all the people stand around you from morning until evening?" 15 Moses replied to his father-in-law, "Because the people come to me to inquire of God. 16 Whenever they have a dispute, it comes to me, and I make a decision between one man and another. I teach [them] ... [More]

Discomfort

by Chet 19. December 2011 09:28
"Western culture has things a little backwards right now. We think that if we had every comfort available to us, we’d be happy. We equate comfort with happiness. And now we’re so comfortable we’re miserable. There’s no struggle in our lives. No sense of adventure. We get in a car, we get in an elevator, it all comes easy. What I’ve found is that I’m never more alive than when I’m pushing and I’m in pain, and I’m struggling for high achievement, and in that struggle I think there’s a magic." "God, I just want what you want." Reeeeeally?

by Chet 25. October 2011 08:29
"Your will be done, on earth, as it is in Heaven." How often have we heard that line of the Lord's Prayer and said, "Yes, God! YOUR will be done. Not mine." And yet 10 minutes later we're griping because we're stuck in traffic because some old lady 10 cars up had the nerve to run over a nail and have a flat tire; and it doesn't even look like she knows where her spare is! Or perhaps it's more like a deadline we know is coming up, or a project we know needs to be completed, and even though we've had a month or more to really plan, set, and achieve the steps necessary to create an excellent end result, we somehow come to the hands, throw up our hands to God, and say "Your will be done! It's out of my hands; I did my best." Reeeeealy? I was listening to end of the Sunday podcast of the Daily Audio Bible this morning and Brian's words caught me. Here's some of what he said (you can read more here): We find ourselves in some sort of trial or hardship. We then go to the Lord in an ... [More]

Beautiful Outlaw by John Eldredge - Experiencing the Playful, Disruptive, Extravagant Personality of Jesus

by Chet 11. October 2011 22:13
Last week I was able to get an advance copy of John Eldredge's new book, Beautiful Outlaw. They'd of course love for me to write a review as the book comes out this week, and I am doing so... even though I haven't finished the book yet. I actually had this whole thing written up and then clicked "close" instead of "save" so round 2 will probably be a bit shorter. I remember when I was back in college that we read the book Knowing God by J.I. Packer. This was an amazingly well written book about the attributes of God, and I found myself feeling like I was really coming to know Him as I learned more about him. I truly did come to know God better during that period, but I don't think it was just the facts that did it. Being surrounded by believers and truth at a small town Christian college will do wonders for your image of God; the only thing... it comes to an end after a few years, and if all you gained was facts about God, you're going to be in a world of hurt when real li... What I learned at my first REMC Conference

by Chet 28. September 2011 12:16
I went to my first conference with a group of REMC / Electric Co-Op's from around the country last week. We were a "vendor" at the meeting so had the chance to set up a little table, meet some other vendors serving this industry, and talk to a wide variety of people from the REMC industry. I learned a number of things, and wanted to get them down here before I lose this sheet of paper. I may come back to this and embellish it later, but these are key things that I can do better at (or keep doing) the next time we go to a conference of any sort. Most of these are in the order of their occurance, or just randomly inserted because I remembered them. It was a good idea to come as early as we did. We had our choice of tables, and also had easily access to electricity. Some other vendors that came later did not have any access to electric. There was a wide variety of booth styles. Some people had 8 foot tall setups with great marketing slogans and images, others had a table full of too... [More]

About Me

Chet Cromer

Hey there. My name's Chet. This is my blog. By trade, I'm a computer programmer / network consultant / database administrator / IT superman or fall-guy, depending on the hour. By identity, though, I'm much more than that. I am an adopted son of God, strong and courageous. I have plenty of faults, but they do not define me. I have a past, but it is not my destiny. I have lots of blood relatives, but most of them do not share hemoglobin with me, but rather simply the blood of our Savior, Jesus Christ.

This is my spot to write. I love writing, but don't do it enough. I run a website called A Walk Through The Word that is also all about writing, but it's more in the context of a once-a-year trip-through-the Bible. This is simply my spot to let stuff out. To vent. To praise. To commentary on whatever it is I want to commentary on.

And so that's that. Read along. Discover who I am and what makes me tick. I hope here that you will find glimpses of a life beyond the shallow world often defined by our careers, relationships, and expectations.

If you'd like to catch me on some other parts of the web, just Google me... there's only one other "Chet Cromer" that I know of, and I think you'll be able to tell the difference. Or you can find me here:
